Erwin Atzenhoefer was born on September 27, 1939, to Willard and Dora (Urhammer) Atzenhoefer on their family farm. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Trimont, where his faith became a cornerstone of his life. Erwin graduated from Trimont High School with the class of 1957 and pursued further education at Vo-Tech in Austin, MN, where he specialized as a Farm Equipment Mechanic.
Following his training, Erwin answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. He served in the Cavalry Division as a Tank Mechanic, a role that combined his mechanical expertise with his dedication to his country.
On September 1, 1962, Erwin married the love of his life, Rosemary Grunert, in Fort Carson, CO. Their union was blessed with four children: Gail, Jessica, Michael, and Dale. The family initially made their home in Welcome before moving to a farm in rural Trimont in 1983. Erwin was a devoted farmer and a skilled mechanic, working at Railway Motors/Harsco and Hodgeman’s Shop. His passion for machinery and his knack for fixing things kept his hands busy and his mind sharp.
Erwin’s commitment to his community was evident through his many years as a 4H leader and his active involvement at Waverly Lutheran Church, where he held various leadership positions. He was also a proud member of the International Harvester Club, where he shared his love for agricultural machinery and fellowship with others.
Erwin will forever be remembered by his loving wife of 62 years, Rosemary; daughters, Gail Lewis and Jessica (Orlin) Howe; sons, Michael (Ann) Atzenhoefer and Dale (Jen) Atzenhoefer; grandchildren, Paul Lewis, Benjamin Lewis, Charles (Kayla) Lewis, Jacob (Shannon) Lewis, Cody (Tasha) Howe, Logan Howe, Evan (Emily) Atzenhoefer, April (Tom) Atzenhoefer, Addalyn Atzenhoefer, Ruby Atzenhoefer, Dakota Karge, and Delaney Karge; great-grandchildren, Kaylynn, Waylon, Aubrey, Oakley, Sawyer, and Brooke; brothers, Donald Atzenhoefer and Kenneth (Roberta) Atzenhoefer; sister, Karen (Clem) Manders; nieces and nephews; as well as many other family and friends.
Erwin was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Dora; grandson, Oryan Howe; and sister-in-law, Marsha Atzenhoefer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Erwin’s name to Waverly Lutheran Church.
